I've spent my career moving between tech, business operations and finance, which is unusual, and it's exactly what makes the systems I build work in practice rather than in theory.

I started on the client side of this problem, not the supplier side. As Business & Finance Manager at an independent education provider, I lived with whatever database or spreadsheet setup was already in place, good or bad. When it wasn't good enough, I taught myself relational database design and built a suite of tools in my spare time to fix it properly.

That grew into setting up business tech infrastructure end to end, databases, workflows, the systems that hold an organisation together day to day, for several independent education establishments, before it became a consultancy in its own right.

After more than a decade in the weeds building databases, I landed on Airtable as the best, most widely applicable tool for growing SMEs. It flexes as the business changes, without needing a developer on retainer.

I'm not a tech person who's never run a P&L. I've done the finance and the operations, and I build systems knowing exactly what it's like to depend on them.
